February 9 2010 - The Winter Olympics Comes to Seaway Toastmasters

Coverage of our Feb 9 meeting is presented by our guest blogger, Carole Anne Levac.

Hello Everyone!

The 2010 Olympics arrived at Seaway Toastmasters on Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010. 6 Members competed in what proved to be a delightful evening of firsts! 3 Evaluators completed their first Evaluations in Style - in a team format no less. Ian Cowan led the Table Topics with a wealth of information about the Olympics and being such an elite group - we almost ALL got to participate! *Smile* Malcolm Robertson anchored the team Acting as Past President - Toastmaster when I was speaking on the program AND as General Evaluator. He was brilliant! Isaiah acted as our timer - I know he's still a guest - but to me he's starting to feel like part of the family and I told him so. Our guest - Vicky Lefebvre left after hearing 95% of the meeting but seemed to have enjoyed herself!

For those of you who missed it - we'll hope to catch up with you at the next meeting. It will be on Tuesday, February 23, 2010. The International Speech Contest - but I'll let Earle DePass your contest chair fill you in more.

I'm not certain if I can make it that night - I'll be turning 47 and I'm not sure what the Universe has planned for me! But I'll catch up to you at some point - be one year wiser and a Reiki Master. *Smile*

See you soon!

Blessed Be!

Carole Anne

Carole Anne was one of two great speakers that night and shared the best speaker ribbon for her excellent delivery of her speech entitled Reina Plante. This was the story of her maternal grandmother and and all that she endured to take care of her family during a time when no matter what the hardship or tragedy, you just did what you had to do. With a family that included 16 children, Reina managed to be caregiver, run a corner store, and make all of the children's clothes among other things. As Carole Anne said in her speech, "They don't make them like her anymore."

Our co winner, Denise Paquette's speech was informative and empowering. Denise shared with us through research and personal experience the dangers of oral cancer if left undetected and untreated and what we can do to take control of our own health. We learned that a simple, painless and inexpensive screening can be done by our dentists to find out if we are at risk. We can also help the oral cancer foundation win 250'000$ to "help lower the death rate from oral cancer" Make sure you do both!

Thanks
